Skiing Snowbird Resort in Utah

I am not much of a skier. I prefer to snowboard. In my mind, I am really good. In reality, I haven’t gone snowboarding in about ten years, so I might be a bit rusty. I have actually given thought to getting back into boarding.

I just wanted to share a really cool video I found. It’s a guy skiing down Snowbird with a cam on his helmet. Really cool. I can’t figure out what’s better…the music or the way he skis.

Opinion On “Gold Doesn’t Lie” Article

As people learn more and more about the world, something starts to happen. Things become a bit more transparent than they used to be. People are getting smart and it’s getting increasingly difficult to “pull the wool” if you know what I mean.

This morning, I came across an article called, “Gold Doesn’t Lie” and started to read it. As I got into the article, I was quite impressed. Finally there was a legitimate website displaying the importance of gold. Usually the main stream media like to bash the yellow stuff. I can go either way. I am not into gold so its value doesn’t bother me too much, but it’s entertaining to read about it.

As I got to the bottom of the article, the “Ah ha” moment fell upon me. There was a line that read, “One of the easiest ways to participate in the advance of gold prices is through either the gold exchange traded fund, the SPDR Gold Trust ETF(GLD)…” The next line talked about buying gold through options. Hmmm…that’s when I became suspicious. The pitch.

From what I have read in passing online articles, purchasing GLD is a good idea if you want to actively trade in gold. It’s not something to do long term. From what I gather, some people are suggesting that the fund is not exactly backed by the physical metal. I am no where near expert level, so I couldn’t tell you either way. People much smarter than me suggest that if you want to really invest in gold for the long term, you should purchase gold bullion. The problem is, it’s getting really expensive.

I am basically writing this post to point out another article that may be somewhat of a sales job more than something that would educate you. While it does a good job of explaining the importance of gold and how gold is more difficult to manipulate than fiat currency, it doesn’t offer a full picture of the wide array of investment options for someone who may be interested in getting involved with the gold bull.

Questions, comments and corrections are always welcome.

The Brushmill by the Waterfall in Chester, CT

We just had the greatest day. My better half had an idea that led us to the Connecticut shore and then a few things afterwards. I will share those few things here and will save the shore adventure for the next post.

Okay, you know those things you experience that you are positive you will remember forever? They don’t come around all that often, but when they do, you just can’t shut up about them. For me, tonight was the second time it’s happened in two years. The first time this occurred, I was standing in Essex, CT, but I’ll get into that later on in life. For now, I just want to tell you about tonight.

After we visited the shore, we drove back up towards Chester, CT. We took the back way (145 North), instead of the Route 9 that we usually head up. I felt like the crisp September air deserved some respect. Jumping on a highway with the windows closed wouldn’t do on a day like today. The back way it was and the back way is what made today even more special.

Every time we move off the beaten path, we learn something. Today, we learned that there is a very pretty area of Connecticut West of the Connecticut River. It extends all the way from the River to New Haven. You know, now that I am writing this, I wonder if this is where they filmed the Blair Witch Project. That would make sense. Hmmm…

Anyway, on the way to the water, we passed the Camp Hazen YMCA. That looked like a pretty cool place. Then, we drove West of the Chester Airport. That’s a very small airport hidden in the woods. It’s a great little airport to land at if you are learning how to fly. I never flew to it, but by the looks of it, I should have. Maybe in another life.

I don’t want to get too much into that part of today, so I’ll tell you what we did when we drove back North on 145. We made a right on West Main Street (148) and continued back towards Chester. After we passed under 9, we made a right into the parking lot of a restaurant called, The Brushmill by the Waterfall. This restaurant is a place my lady recently learned about from another restaurant we recently visited, called the Griswold Inn in Essex, CT. I guess the Brushmill advertised in a paper or something.

A few nights ago, my lady told me about the Brushmill. As she was telling me about this place, my ears perked up. I love new restaurants. Especially ones with character. I ran upstairs and checked out the Brushmill’s website. Boy, was I in for a treat. It looked great.

Since the Brushmill in Chester was on the route we were taking to the shore, I had a secret plan in the back of my head that would bring us to the restaurant for dinner. We weren’t dressed for the occasion, but the staff was very accommodating. I mean, I was wearing a fleece and jeans, it’s not like I was in flip flops or anything. It’s just that everyone else there seemed to have planned their visit. I’m not all that much of a planner. The extent of my plans for the day were, “Get in car and drive.” Yeah, that’s me.

Let me tell you about the Brushmill. Whatever people say about it, it’s true. This restaurant was really great. Just the ambience is worth another visit. Take a look at the quick photos I took below. It’s an old building situated next to a river with a small waterfall. There are really nice dining areas along with an inviting tap room. You can eat outside on two patios (that I know of) as well. As we were talking with the hostess after dinner, we learned that some live music was going to start at about 8:30. Since we were ready to leave at 7:30, we are going to have to save that for another night.

We had dinner out a few nights ago at another restaurant. It was good and all, but one of our complaints was that there was no color on the plates. We kind of felt like we paid too much. It’s just one of those things for us. Tonight’s dinner was different. I had the stuffed shrimp and she had the salmon. We both had the mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus. You can see the colors on the plate, can’t you. It looked great and tasted ever better. I am proud to say that we will be going back to the Brushmill by the Waterfall. We really liked it.

Here’s a side note: During dinner, I kept mentioning that I wish I had taken my better half to a restaurant like this on our first date. It’s quite romantic. This is a little hint for you fellas out there…

Take a look at these pictures. They don’t do the Brushmill justice because it was getting dark, but you get the idea. I’ll get more during our next visit.

New Roto Auger For Planting Small Trees

I just wanted to share my new toy with you. It’s called a Roto Auger. It’s for planting the 150 small evergreen transplants I have arriving next week.

I will talk more about the trees when I get them, but for now, I want to let you know how I am going to plant them. Okay, here’s my plan:

1. Drill hole in the ground about a foot deep using my new Roto Auger.

2. Put tree roots in the hole and fill hole with water.

3. Let water absorb into soil and then fill the hole with the removed dirt.

4. Cover area with wood chips and water again.

I actually had to delay my tree order because it’s so dry around here. Luckily it rained this evening, so things should be a bit better, but I still plan on watering the trees well into Autumn.

I also had to get a few supplies before I received the trees. I needed the auger and I needed the wood chips. Without them, I would be planting all these trees with a shovel and the area wouldn’t be covered to hold in the moisture. That’s what I did last time and it worked okay. I think this way is better though because I can really loosen the soil and have it absorb water much better. Then, after I put on the wood chips, the moisture won’t just dry up like it did with all the trees I planted this Spring.

Anyway, let me tell you about this nice new Roto Garden Auger. It’s not bad. I was expecting something a lot more flimsy. This one is pretty heavy duty and has some nice weight to it. The end of it has three flat spots so your drill holds it without slipping and almost any drill with work with this thing. I bought it on Amazon for about $33. Not bad.

I was going to purchase a big heavy duty half inch drill to operate this bad boy, but I don’t think I will be needing that. I tried a drilling a few holes in the dirt with my cordless drill and it worked out okay. If I have trouble, I may still get the other drill though. We’ll see what happens.

Here are some photos of the new Roto Auger.

Many people call this auger a bulb planter. Let me tell you that you can use this thing for so many things. People use it to plant small trees, put up fences, plant bulbs…I am guessing and whole bunch of things. If you plan on getting one, don’t let anything stop you. It is 2 feet long and 2 3/4 inches wide, so your imagination is the limit.

Working Out With Muay Thai and Krav Maga

I feel great. I feel absolutely great.

Now, not many of you may know that I am a bluebelt in Brazilian Jiu Jistu. Over the last years, I have really excelled in this. I have earned myself a body better than the one I occupied while I was in college and have learned self defense skills that are extremely valuable.

So, why do I feel great? Well, I do because of all the stuff that’s going on in the world. So many wise people (one of them being Gerald Celente) continue to preach that good physical and mental fitness are key to getting through hard times. I am actually in the middle of listening to one of Gerald’s interviews. He just mentioned people are going to make things more difficult for themselves than they need to be. He said…”those who continue to stuff their faces with junk food and who are sedentary” are going to have a tough time rising in the new economy. Well, that’s the way I translated his statement based on past interviews.

As he was saying this, I felt a small shot of adrenaline flow throughout my body. I felt that because today was my second day training in Muay Thai and Krav Maga. If you don’t know what those are, do a quick Google search. It’s some good stuff that is absolutely exhausting, but a great workout.

I think I am hitting a home run on the physical side of things. I am a vegetarian, eat no junk food (well, besides ice cream), train in martial arts six days a week and continue to educate myself about economics and the unfoldings of the world.

I am not sure what else I can do, but I am sure that I will act if an opportunity arises. I have never been known to sit around and wait for stuff.

Happy Labor Day

Okay, I said it. Now, can we all please get back to work?

It’s so funny because for most of the Winter, I complain about the cold and dark. I can’t wait to get back outside to start my planting and lawn mowing again. After the long Winter, I need a break from it all. A break from cabin fever.

Well, it’s almost the end of Summer and I am now excited to spend more time inside working. I work out of the house and the computer consumes much of my day. Having the warm Summer sunshine outside is distracting to say the least. Autumn and Winter are perfect seasons to get my head back together, read and work inside.

So, with that in mind, I am officially asking that everyone get back to work. The Summer season is virtually over, Labor Day is almost over, the kids are back in school and we now have a few good months without the interruption of serious holidays. We should take this opportunity to refocus and make some money.

Thank you.

There, I said it again.

It’s Tomato Season in Connecticut

I know that people who have gardens have been picking tomatoes all season long, but for us, tomato season is just starting.

Every year, we head down to South Glastonbury, CT to pick up a big box of tomatoes, along with a smaller box of peaches. I just love tomato sandwiches and a whole box of tomatoes does a really nice job of satisfying my cravings.

This year, I found a farm that is closer to us that offers the same big box of tomatoes. These are the kind of rejected tomatoes that you can buy for a heck of a lot less $$ than what they usually cost. We got this big box for only $12.

I will admit that my excitement does get the better of me when I go ahead and actually buy the box. When I get back to the house, I always wonder what I am going to do with all of these red things. I eat a lot of sandwiches and salads, but there are a whole bunch of tomatoes left over.

Instead of handing out tomatoes to random people on the street, I decided that this year was a good time to start making tomato sauce. I figure that I could make a whole big pot of sauce and then pour small portions into zip lock bags to store in the freezer. I did and I did. That is, I did make the sauce and I did store it in the freezer. Mmm, mmm, delicious.

Does Dormant Grass Grow Back After a Long Hot Summer Drought?

Yep, that’s what we had. A long, hot Summer drought. I am not sure if a drought was ever declared around these here parts, but a drought is what we had. I know that when there is hardly any water in the river down the road, we have problems.

On top of the lack of water, the heat was unbearable. This really did a number on the grass. What once looked really great and promising in the Spring turned into brown crispy grass in the Summer. It was terribly depressing. It seemed like all my hard work went down the tubes.

I will tell you that I am starting to see a glimmer of hope out there in the lawn. Much of the bluegrass that I planted it starting to spread to some of the more damaged parts of the lawn. As the temperature begins to cool down in early September, I am seeing little sprouts of grass pop up all over the place. I spread a bag of Scotts Turf Builder fertilizer to help things along. I think bluegrass really likes fertilizer.

The only problem is that we still haven’t had that much rain. We had a few days here and there, but not enough to make a difference. I thought we were going to get something out of hurricane Earl, but that didn’t really materialize. I am sure that as the rains continue to return throughout the Autumn, I will see a huge improvement in what once was dried brown grass. I think the bluegrass will spread nicely.

I was considering aerating and overseeding again this year, but since the bluegrass that I put down last year is doing the work for me, I think I will save a hundred bucks and see what happens by itself. I’ll just do my normal rounds of fertilizer.

How To Fix a Sagging Mattress

I think the majority of people who sleep on mattresses have the same problem. That’s right…a sagging mattress. Many people think the cure for what ails them is to purchase a new mattress. But what do you do when your mattress is less than a year old?

Last year, we bought a brand new king sized Sleep To Live mattress from Sleepys. It is the 200 series and its firmness was determined by Sleepys’ mattress firmness what-cha-ma-call-it thing. Basically it’s a bed in the store that figures out what firmness of mattress you should buy based on your height, weight, etc…We thought it was great.

Let’s fast forward to less than a year in the future. Our mattress is sagging. Unfortunately, since I am longer and more dense than my partner, the mattress mainly sags on my side. She doesn’t seem to have a problem. We have rotated this mattress many a time to no avail.

Now, I am not one to return a mattress. The reason for this is that I am well aware that all mattresses sag as they are broken in. The problem is, that once these things start sagging and you try to sleep on your stomach, it feels like someone is ripping your spine out. Uggg. Waking up to that is no fun. Oh well. I guess we could have saved $1800 and gone with a cheaper model. I will admit that the first few months were wonderful.

So, what did I do to help my little issue? Well, it’s not too difficult and it really works. I learned it from my parents a long time ago. To fix a sagging mattress, you basically need to identify where exactly it is sagging. Once you do that, you need to determine how much the sag is. A half inch? An inch? Whatever it is, all you need to do is to neatly fold some old beach towels and place them under the sagging part of the mattress. That’s right, under the mattress. This will boost the mattress up to where it used to be. I did this a few nights ago and my sleep has improved greatly. The best part of this method is that things are completely customizable.

My lady keeps asking why we don’t just return the mattress for a new one. She is an optimist. I have no doubts that if we head down this path, we will be returning mattresses for the rest of our lives. I would rather just fix it my way and move on.

Saving Money Through Bad Credit

My sister and I were talking tonight. I told her that I wrote a blog post about a Yahoo! article that got me all sorts of annoyed. She seemed to agree with what I was saying and went one step further. She said she gets especially bothered by those articles that are entitled something like, “10 Ways To Save Money” and then have little to no real applicable content in them.

I kind of dismissed them saying, “Yeah, all those articles are a complete waste of time.” I do get frustrated at this fluffy web content because I rarely ever see any real punch.

I kind of sat there and thought for a minute. Then I said, “You know, a really good way to save money for someone is for them to get rid of all their credit cards.” I mean, we all know that there is very little on this planet that is more evil than debt. Then, I went even one step further and said, “Even better…people should default on stuff like a car loan or mortgage. That way, there credit is shot and then when they want to go get another credit card, they can’t.”

In a perfect world my theory might work. Unfortunately, in our world, even people with lousy credit can still get credit cards. The problem is that these new cards come with very high interest rates.

I am still sticking with what I said though. Basically, debt is bad and the faster you can get away from it and stay away from it the better.
