I know that people who have gardens have been picking tomatoes all season long, but for us, tomato season is just starting.
Every year, we head down to South Glastonbury, CT to pick up a big box of tomatoes, along with a smaller box of peaches. I just love tomato sandwiches and a whole box of tomatoes does a really nice job of satisfying my cravings.
This year, I found a farm that is closer to us that offers the same big box of tomatoes. These are the kind of rejected tomatoes that you can buy for a heck of a lot less $$ than what they usually cost. We got this big box for only $12.
I will admit that my excitement does get the better of me when I go ahead and actually buy the box. When I get back to the house, I always wonder what I am going to do with all of these red things. I eat a lot of sandwiches and salads, but there are a whole bunch of tomatoes left over.
Instead of handing out tomatoes to random people on the street, I decided that this year was a good time to start making tomato sauce. I figure that I could make a whole big pot of sauce and then pour small portions into zip lock bags to store in the freezer. I did and I did. That is, I did make the sauce and I did store it in the freezer. Mmm, mmm, delicious.
