One Up On Wall Street by Peter Lynch

I just finished reading “One Up On Wall Street” by Peter Lynch. It was a pretty good book. It isn’t one that I am going to keep on my shelf because I don’t follow the same investment philosophy. I actually already gave it to my brother-in-law who appreciates stock picking.

I will confess that if I was into investing in individual stocks, this book would have been more valuable to me. I enjoy asset allocation and re-balancing instead. I am not one to stress over something that I can do nothing about…stock prices being one of them. I would rather put things on auto-pilot.

With that said, it was a good book. I especially liked the section in the back that explains all the typical pitfalls of the average investor. It was a nice bit of humor. I also learned quite a bit about what kinds of companies there are out there (fast growth, slow growth, stalwarts, asset plays, etc…). At some point in my life, I may need to know this stuff.

Peter Lynch is very good at painting a picture of the stock market at large. He explains how “cyclical” it is, which is comforting no matter what method of investing you follow. Things go up and things go down. That’s the way it works. If you are new to investing and just put a bunch of money in the market, it’s good to understand that you may lose some of it to only gain it back again and then some.

Instead of rehashing the book here, I am going to post some videos….Ok, hold on. I just looked through YouTube and couldn’t find a single video for a review on “One Up On Wall Street” or anything worth watching on Peter Lynch. I am going to keep looking and will post something here when I find it. Stay tuned.
