Huge Black Beetle – Central Connecticut

Okay, this is pretty exciting. Not for me, but for beetle lovers.

I was outside this afternoon walking around on the grass. I looked down and there was this huge black beetle trying to make it’s way through the grass. I have no idea what it was doing there, but it didn’t look like it belonged. I decided to ignore it and move on.

As I made my way down the hill I was on, I happened to see another large black beetle, but this one wasn’t as big as the last. It was the same type of beetle, just a little smaller. I got all sorts of excited and ran inside to get a container to catch both beetles in.

I got a container and ran back outside. I found both beetles and put them in the container. The smaller one immediately jumped on the back of the larger one and got into a compromising position. I am assuming it was a male, if that exists.

I ran inside to show my better half the beetles. She was disgusted, so I went back outside and let them go. The smaller one flew away and the larger one stayed put so I could get some nice pictures.

If you know what type of beetle this is, please leave a comment. I have seen these things since I was a kid and never knew their proper name.

  1. My mother told me she saw a huge black beetle with jagged antennae and she took a bad photo..the ones in your photo look slightly reddish so were not sure if theyre the same ones. You said you’ve seen these for years? Because weve never seen anything like this before (theyre in New Canaan)

  2. I just saw this same beetle minutes ago… Actually heard it scuttling across the driveway, then it tried in vain to crawl up the side of the garage door and fell on it’s back…. It was so big, about the size of my pinkie finger, that I turned it over with my foot, and it scuttled away…. Whoa!!!! Biggest beetle I’ve ever seen in the wild…. Searching google for it’s name…!!

  3. I searched and think it’s the broad necked root boarer!!!! Pics look like it!!!! Amazing creature!!

  4. I’ve seen one of your mystery beetles, and I think ‘Laura markowicz’ is right (the beetle being a broad necked something. Just saying.

  5. I found this beetle today in our yard. I took photo’s of it when it has its long appendage extended out the “Back-end” …I did find out it is the Broad Necked Root Boarer.
But when you come across a big beetle like this with that “spike” out the back, it’s scarey. haha Wish I could have posted the photo’s here to show you.

  6. Found this same beetle today in my yard in Simsbury along with a smaller one that flew away. Researched to find out that the retractable spike from the back is to lay larva in the ground that eat tree roots. RIP broad necked root boarer…

  7. I wanted to send a pic but can’t from here….Just saw the same beetle one on a tree in the backyard…..Littleton,Ma. Not pretty….

  8. OMG, I saw this EXACT type of beetle a few weeks ago. It was HUGE and scary and this is the exact kind that I saw, your photos are good. I have been worried ever since, wondering what kind of beetle this thing was. I’m glad you documented it.
Thanks, and please let me know if you find out.
