Just Noticeable Difference or “JND” is probably one of the most annoying things in the world. What is JND? Well, it’s basically the “…smallest detectable difference between a starting and secondary level of a particular sensory stimulus” (Wikipedia). What it really is, is when either the retailer or the Federal Reserve are stealing from you.
I know you have seen it. The most prevalent example these days is a half gallon of ice cream, or what used to be a half gallon. They aren’t half gallons anymore. Now, they are a “thin” half gallon. I’m not even sure what the content is now because I refuse to buy them. What happened was the size got smaller and the price got higher. What? Oh yeah, it’s happening all over the place. It’s how retailers deal with inflation and make more money at the same time. Trust me, the retailers are at fault too. It’s not just inflation. I know of companies still charging that additional “fuel fee” for deliveries.
The whole reason I bring this up is because I went food shopping the other day and became angry while browsing the shelves. It’s not the prices so much that bother me, it’s the fact that the food items keep getting smaller. I just want to tell these people to keep the item the same size and charge more. Very annoying. I mean, I can deal with the added expense better than I can deal with getting two of the item or having to run back out to the store to get another one of whatever I am talking about.
Yeah, but that won’t happen. Here’s what will:
- Item keeps shrinking
- The price stays the same or increases
- Item gets to a point where it can’t shrink anymore without upsetting customers
- Retailer decides to offer a new item that’s twice the size of what they are currently offering, but at twice the price
- The larger item is the same size as the item originally was
I am not sure about you, but that’s what I call theft. It’s theft plain and simple. It’s theft from the retailer and it’s theft from the Federal reserve for pumping so much currency into the currency supply. Again, who pays the hidden tax called inflation? You do. While the government’s debt becomes worth less and less, the general population pays more and more. Hmmm, makes you kind of mad, doesn’t it?
If you have no idea what I am talking about, I advise you read, “The Creature from Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin.” It will shed some light on the whole situation.
I’ll leave you with a good example of what I bought the other day. Take a close look at the weight of each product. Hmmm…
