I have a little problem. For some strange reason, Google Chrome isn’t connecting to the internet on my computer.
This started happening right after I got rid of that spyware that installed itself on said computer. You can read about that in my Spybot-S&D vs. Malwarebytes post. Ever since, I have had to use Firefox or Internet Explorer. You know my feeling on that…IE should not even be offered anymore and Firefox uses too much RAM. This is making work on the computer very sloooow because I usually have about eight tabs open at a time. Not good with a laptop that’s about three years old.
I did a Google search for “Google Chrome Not Connecting To Internet” and found a few pages. They talked about clearing the cache, history and all that. I did that and it did nothing. Then, some other pages said things about the Symantec Norton Anti-virus firewall causing the problem. I opened Norton and couldn’t even find the firewall settings. On my other computer, I have them, but not on this one.
I think I am just going to uninstall Norton Antivirus and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It’s free, fast and is a heck of a lot less complicated than Symantec. Man, when I look at Symantec, I get dizzy from all that junk on the screen. All those settings are confusing. I like Security Essentials much better.
So, has anyone else had this problem? Will uninstalling Norton work? I’ll let you know what I find.
UPDATE:
I fixed this issue and wanted to tell you what I did.
The error message that I was receiving in Google Chrome was:
Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED): Unknown error.
I found a few websites and people seemed pretty confident that the “Proxy Settings” were the cause. How the “Use Proxy Server” box got checked off, I don’t know. Probably because of that spyware I was telling you about.
Okay, so how did I turn off the proxy settings is Google Chrome? Here’s a pictorial.
First, I clicked the little wrench in the upper right corner and clicked “Options.”
Then, in the Google Chrome Options box, I clicked the “Change Proxy Settings” button.
In the Internet Properties box, I clicked on the “LAN Settings” button.
Lastly, I unchecked the “Use A Proxy Server” checkoff box in the LAN settings box.
After I did this and hit “Ok” everything worked fine and Google Chrome loaded web pages as it should. I hope this helps if you have the same problem and I did.

I have the same problem. Shortly after my McAfee expired, and before I had time to install Norton Antivirus, I started seeing a box that says “The following page(s) have become unresponsive…” that asks if I want to kill pages or wait. Neither option works. I checked the Proxy setting, but mine were what they were supposed to be. I’ve done full system scans for viruses and malware and fixed any minor problems they detected, uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome, made a new user profile, etc. And it still doesn’t work. Have you heard of anything to solve this?
I have also heard about Chrome not connecting to the internet because of anti virus firewalls. You have to turn them off or something like that.
Even though McAfee antivirus has expired, it should still work. You just can’t get updates. Could a setting in there be off? Do you still have the program installed? I would poke around in the firewall settings.
Let me know what happens.
I was having the same problem too, but luckly I read your comments and made me think… apparently my daughter blocked google chrome when McAfee popped a window requesting internet access (I use McAfee AV soft.) .. So this is what I did: 1.) I opened up McAfee antivirus software. 2.) click on Navigation icon on the top right corner of the McAfee window. 3.) Navigation window opens and click on where it says (firewall) on under the features. 4.) Next click on program permissions and scroll down to find goole chrome and see if what type of access it has. eg: full/outgoing/blocked. (mine said block) 5.) I tried turning firewall off and on but didn’t work, I clicked on restore defaults (this showed me a window withing McAfee of programs that were blocked including Google Chrome. 6.) Click on the Google Chrome tab and this should high light it giving you option to edit/add/delete. 7.) Click on ADD tab, then it will ask you what type of access do you want to grant this program (full/outgoing/block) click on FULL and then the SAVE tab. open google chrome and test it.. mine got fixed this way.
Hopefully this will help you! Please post your results..
Thanks a bunch elsonicd. I followed your solution and it worked like a charm. I recently had a Macafee update and it automatically blocked Chrome. Thanks for your detailed instructions. Glad that I am able to use chrome again
Hi, Thank you very much for your information. This worked very quickly and i hadn’t been able to use google chrome before i did it so thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot admin, I had the same problem with both chrome and IE. At first I thought it was either my firewall or the cache, but after checking countless times I gave up on it. Lucky for me I came across this page and your method worked like a charm. Now I can come back to my beloved Chrome instead of letting Firefox uses all my laptop’s memories.
elsonicd, unfortunately that didn’t work for me. i opened up my McAfee program and it had expired. I went to the navigation page just like you said but there was only one problem. it was grayed out. I couldn’t click on anything, it was completely unresponsive. i’ve done some google searching and pretty much all of the results say the same thing as you’ve said or there were no responses to the questions i had.
