Setting The Automatic Door Locks On 2008 BMW X5

About a week ago, I brought my 2008 BMW X5 3.0 in to the dealer for its 15,000 mile service. They changed the oil, gave the car the “Standard Scope” (whatever that is) and then had to do a software download. I guess there was an update, just like a regular computer. Like usual, the dealer did a nice job and when they were all finished, I went on my merry way.

A few days later I noticed something strange. I noticed that the doors weren’t automatically locking when I would start driving. Before I went in for the service, the doors would lock when I hit about 8MPH. Oh well. I figure that the software upgrade reset some of the car’s factory settings.

To fix this and reset the auto lock feature, I basically just fiddled with the i-drive until I found the correct settings. It wasn’t difficult and it was only about four steps. Since I had this issue, I thought that it would be a good idea to post the steps here. I know how many people out there don’t have access to the BMW user manual, so this may help.

Okay, here goes…

1. Press the MENU button.

2. Press the I on the controller to open the menu. (push button straight down)

3. Select SETTINGS and push the controller.

4. Select VEHICLE/TIRES and push the controller.

5. To change the upper field, turn the knob side to side. Then, choose DOOR LOCKS and select by pushing the controller.

6. Select CENTRAL LOCKING and push the controller.

7. Select LOCK AFTER DRIVING and push the controller.

After that, you can just push MENU again to get back to the home screen. See, it’s that easy. And if that wasn’t enough, I even took some pictures for you.
