Investing, Telecoms, Gold and Being Green

Put Your Investing on Autopilot

“Set it and forget it!” was a famous tagline for the dishwasher-safe Showtime Rotisserie oven. But did you know you can do the same thing with your investments? You can set them and forget them. Here’s how.

Invest Like A Billionaire: Telecoms Calling

The world’s richest man today, contrary to what you may expect, is not Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. His name is Carlos Slim Helu: a Mexican whose rise to the top was propelled by the fast-growing telecommunications industry.

Investing Lessons From The Lost Decade

Most investors are painfully aware that the past 10 years have been pretty dismal for the average Joe and Jane. The “Lost Decade” is aptly named, seeing as the S&P 500 wound up basically flat over that time, even as it endured several roller-coaster rides. As you might expect, some money managers destroyed an inordinate amount of wealth over the past decade.

How to Invest in Gold the Right Way

The expression “as good as gold” suggests that gold is something of a sure thing when it comes to investments. But, while gold and other commodities remain a solid investment choice, when it comes to investing there’s no such thing as a sure thing.

How To Be a “Green” Investor

Many individual investors are starting to look for ways to make a positive impact on the environment while still being able to save and invest for retirement. Protect Mother Earth and improve your net worth at the same time: seems like a no brainer, right?

Photos of Spring Flowers

I did another walk around the property last week. I took some nice photos then, and a few again last evening. I noticed the Bleeding Hearts and had to pull the camera back out.

This has been a pretty good Spring so far. It’s been relatively warm and sunny. It hasn’t rained in a while, but that’s being taken care of right now. I think we are supposed to get a full day of rain today with showers on and off for the next few days. I’ll take that. It’s good to see the grass and flowers soaking it up. Next week is supposed to be sunny and warm in the 70s. After the rain, that’s the perfect condition for new growth. I can’t wait.

Anyway, here are the latest photos. Enjoy.

By the way, if you would like to see probably the best pictures of the Columbine flower on the internet, you might want to visit, “A Close-up View of the Columbine.”

Setting The Automatic Door Locks On 2008 BMW X5

About a week ago, I brought my 2008 BMW X5 3.0 in to the dealer for its 15,000 mile service. They changed the oil, gave the car the “Standard Scope” (whatever that is) and then had to do a software download. I guess there was an update, just like a regular computer. Like usual, the dealer did a nice job and when they were all finished, I went on my merry way.

A few days later I noticed something strange. I noticed that the doors weren’t automatically locking when I would start driving. Before I went in for the service, the doors would lock when I hit about 8MPH. Oh well. I figure that the software upgrade reset some of the car’s factory settings.

To fix this and reset the auto lock feature, I basically just fiddled with the i-drive until I found the correct settings. It wasn’t difficult and it was only about four steps. Since I had this issue, I thought that it would be a good idea to post the steps here. I know how many people out there don’t have access to the BMW user manual, so this may help.

Okay, here goes…

1. Press the MENU button.

2. Press the I on the controller to open the menu. (push button straight down)

3. Select SETTINGS and push the controller.

4. Select VEHICLE/TIRES and push the controller.

5. To change the upper field, turn the knob side to side. Then, choose DOOR LOCKS and select by pushing the controller.

6. Select CENTRAL LOCKING and push the controller.

7. Select LOCK AFTER DRIVING and push the controller.

After that, you can just push MENU again to get back to the home screen. See, it’s that easy. And if that wasn’t enough, I even took some pictures for you.

Top Dressing Lawn With Compost

So what did you do for Earth Day? I spent about four hours spreading compost around on top of some lousy soil in an attempt to add organics to sandy “dirt.”

I’ll tell you…when I first took a look at the five yards of compost sitting there on the grass, I was excited. I couldn’t wait to get to it. But after a few hours, the thrill wore off. I remember staggering over to take a break by leaning on a tree. It didn’t help that all I had in my system was a cup of coffee. After I went inside to eat a bagel, I found enough energy to get the job done.

Five yards is more than I thought it would be. The pile didn’t look all that big, but when I got into shoveling it, the volume really became apparent. Good thing we have more than enough lawn area to cover. I completed everything I wanted to and then some.

So, what did I do? Well, I basically threw some Neseed grass seed on the bare dirt areas and then covered those areas up with about an inch of compost. I know everyone recommends about a half inch, but I really needed to add some goodness to the, what I like to call “dirt.” I don’t think this dirt could grow anything without adding something to it.

After I did that, I just spread about a half inch to an inch to the rest of the lawn along the road. I first spread it out with a hard rake and then a leaf rake. It looked so good and black. Now that it’s dried out a bit, I may head back up there and rake it out some more so the grass shows through.

I can’t wait for a few rains to come by so I can see the lawn grow through this stuff.

Oh yeah…where did I get the compost? Well, since I live in Connecticut, I gave Collins Compost from Enfield a call. The charge $25 per yard with a $90 delivery fee. The reason it was $90 is because we are about an hour away. I think we are at the edge of the delivery zone. It’s good stuff. If you want compost, give them a call.

When Do Worms Become Active In The Spring?

It’s an interesting question because I haven’t seen all too many earth worms around this year.

So far this Spring, I have screened about ten wheelbarrow loads of compost. I am not sure I have seen any worms in any of that compost. The strange thing is, I screened many wheelbarrow loads full of compost last Autumn and I had more worms than I knew what to do with. I had a grand ol’ time throwing that compost and those worms all over the lawn. Hmmm, what fun for the soil.

Today, I screened another load of compost. I still didn’t see any worms. I began thinking something was wrong, so I went inside and searched for, “when do worms come out” and “when do worms become active in the Spring.” I found a few interesting results.

The first result that caught my attention was called, “Frequently Asked Questions About Earthworms.” This web page offered a lot of good information, but I am not sure it answered my question. The second page that caught my attention was called, “Earthworms and Crop Management” and gave me a better clue. This page said, “The best time to observe or count earthworm populations is early- to mid-spring (often April in North Central states), or late fall (November).”

Even after reading all this information, I am still confused. It’s the middle of April and all I have seen in the way of earth worms so far are the ones that come out after it rains. There are thousands of them. Most of them are really small though, so I am assuming they are young.

I guess it’s still too early for worms. Perhaps the soil is too cold and they are burrowed down too deep. I am going to keep my eye out for them because I really like to spread them across the yard when I spread the compost over the grass.

The Richest Man in Babylon

I bet you have heard of this book. It’s called, “The Richest Man in Babylon” and it was written by George S. Clason. It’s one of those books you know has been hanging around out there, but just never had any reason to read.

Well, since I got on my book kick, I decided to pick it up. When I ordered it, I was really excited. I think I picked this one out when I was getting “Rich Dad Poor Dad” and “The Millionaire Next Door.” It fit the same theme. The only problem I had was that when I finally received this book, I discovered that it was small in comparison to the others. I thought that it wasn’t going to offer much.

The Richest Man In Babylon by George S. Clason

I put the book down and then picked it up after a few days. I flipped through the pages and read a few lines. It’s like the sentences were written on old English or something. I got kind of annoyed and planned on never reading the book.

Let’s fast forward to the point I ran out of books to read. Hmmm…there sat “The Richest Man In Babylon.” I decided to give it a shot. I actually only planned on skimming the first chapter, but I am more than half way through it now. I got used to the writing very quickly and started appreciating the content. It’s a very well written and insightful book.

I am going to show you a review by a fellow who calls himself the SilverFuturist. I love this guy because he always gives the most helpful reviews on things. It’s like you can give him an assignment and be blown away with his results. Here’s what the SilverFuturist has to say about “The Richest Man In Babylon.”

I think that about sums it up. Even though I am not finished with the book, I think it’s going to be a worthwhile read. I also like it because it really goes hand in hand with many of the other books that I have been reading.

Persepolis At Eastern Connecticut State University

Have you ever heard of a movie called “Persepolis?” I know, neither have I.

My life partner invited me to a showing of it last week at Eastern Connecticut State University. At first, I didn’t want to go. I mean, who wants to go watch a movie at a college during their free time? Anything that takes me away from the computer is frowned upon by yours truly. But after I watched the trailer on YouTube, I had a change of heart.

Another thing…when a female asks a male to join her for a movie at a college (or anywhere for that matter), it’s in the male’s best interest to join her. Spouses only take “no” a certain number of times before asking other people who might be more inclined to go. It’s called “maintaining” a relationship. After all, she would go to a monster truck rally with you.

Eastern has a pretty nice theater. Nicer than I thought they would have. Here’s a pic:

The lighting was good, the screen was good and the seats were comfy. I didn’t shift too much like I normally do. In general, I can sit for about an hour. After that, I need to get up and leave. This movie was 95 minutes, but I made it.

So what’s the movie about, anyway? Here’s what Wikipedia says:

“The story follows a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution. The story ends with Marjane as a 24-year-old expatriate. The title is a reference to the historic city of Persepolis.”

It was okay. The trailer I posted above really makes it seem like there is going to be more action than there is. Even though this film is one of those smaller films that everyone loves so much, I found it somewhat limited. I wish they would have really delved into some controversial issues. Overall though, I think it was good. It’s hard to say because I am such a critic. I really have to be blown away for something to be on my “A” list.

Okay, peace out.

Early Spring Flowers, Leaves and Buds

About a week ago, I took a stroll around the property taking photos of various flowers, leaves and buds. It was nice and clear that day, so the pictures really came out nicely. The only problem is that there was a breeze that was a bit more powerful than I would have liked. Other than that…perfect day.

Here are some of the photos I took. I edited some out so I was left with only the best ones.

The Millionaire Mind

I just finished up a pretty good book. It was called, “The Millionaire Mind” by Thomas J. Stanley.

If you have read this blog over the past few months, you know that I have really gotten into reading. I mean, I have read for years, but I have only recently gotten into reading something with a purpose. I guess that purpose is to see what “the other half” is doing. More accurately speaking, they are only a small fraction of the country…the millionaires that is.

A while back, I wrote about a book that I had just finished reading. It was called, “The Millionaire Next Door” by the same author. I think that was Dr. Stanley’s claim to fame. The book was very enlightening and I learned a whole heck of a lot from it.

The Millionaire Mind is (as you might have guessed) a very similar book. The main difference is that the author goes into much greater detail on each topic than he did in the previous book. At times I wondered how he managed to write so many pages on such a similar topic, but he did it with ease. It was a fairly quick and entertaining read. If you like this kind of stuff.

What’s the bottom line? It’s quite simple. If you want to figure out what you are doing wrong or if you want to know how the more well-off actually live, you might want to pick this book up. It provides a lot of answers.

I Installed Google Chrome Web Browser

I have had it. Today was the day I stopped using Firefox.

If you remember back to an earlier post about Norton Internet Security making my computer slow, I was up in arms. Well, I also discovered something else that was making my computer slow. It’s called Firefox.

Here’s the deal. I work all day on the computer. I usually have about five windows open and am doing all sorts of things. There are usually at least two browser windows open. I would say that about once an hour, I have to close everything down and sweep the system. The reason for this is simply sluggish performance.

After doing some research on how Norton sucks up RAM, I also discovered how Firefox does the same thing. Folks are quite passionate about these topics, to say the least. Needless to say, I can’t be forced to close everything down once an hour while I am trying to get work done.

So, what did I do? I downloaded and installed Google Chrome. So far so good. It’s really fast. Only time will tell if Google Chrome sucks up RAM while sitting idly.

Now, I am not under any illusion that what I do is a cure all. After all, I did write a post last year where I explained how in love I was with Firefox. Back then, it was the best thing since sliced bread. But, at the time I was comparing it to Internet Explorer and I would still choose Firefox over IE any day of the week.
