Comcast, XFinity, Hulu and Netflix

So the other day, I was looking over my phone/cable/internet bill by Comcast and my face started to turn red. The high price of entertainment has finally caught up with me.

Let me ask you a question. Since when has cable TV cost $50? Since when has a phone bill cost $50? Since when has cable internet cost $73? That’s right, all together we pay $213 per month. This really gets me mad. And Comcast has the %$^&* to run commercials on TV based on price? Silly.

Okay, now that I got that off my chest, let’s look a little closer at the bill. The cable TV is a ripoff at $50. We have discussed changing to a satellite dish (Dish Network or Direct TV), but what they say is true. There are many interruptions because of cloudy weather and rain. Yup, we know this for a fact. We had it for three years. It wasn’t terrible and we survived. I think we can get this service for about $30 a month. It’s a viable backup if I get mad enough.

Now, let’s look at the $50 phone bill. True, we do have unlimited local and long distance and perhaps I would feel a little better if we actually used the phone. You know what? I’m not going to worry about it. Let’s just say prices have gone up.

Lastly, we are at the internet bill. I must confess, we do have business class internet with a dedicated IP. This is all for business. We also have a few computers and the uptime is great. Can’t complain there.

So basically when I break it down, I’m not that angry. I’m just surprised at how costly things have gotten over the years. But then again, services have increased as well. I am not going to be one of those complainers though because all I need to do is to buy some Comcast stock and I will be paying myself. Almost.

After I got all red faced the other day, I decided to head over to Comcast’s website. I was looking for cheaper alternatives. Just to let you know, there really aren’t any. The cheapest cable TV plan is about $30 and you get about ten of the worst channels on the planet. One thing I did notice though was a new little feature they offer. It’s called XFinity.

What’s XFinity? I guess it’s what Comcast is now calling their TV, phone and internet service now. Why? I have no idea. I did visit xfinity.com to learn a bit more.

When I got over to the XFinity website, I saw a link that said, “Watch XFinity TV.” I was like, “Whoa.” When I clicked the link, I was brought over to Fancast. I guess this is another Comcast website.

So, what’s Fancast? Well, it’s a neat website that offers free viewing of many of the great TV shows of all time and some that are even running presently. It’s awesome. I was watching Gilligan’s Island for a few minutes. Man, what memories. The only thing is that I’m not sure if Fancast only works in this house because we are running Comcast internet or if anyone can get this stuff. I’ll have to find out.

You know…I guess there is always the option of canceling our cable TV service and just relying on something like Fancast or Hulu and a dose of Netflix. Now that’s an idea…

Oh yeah, I don’t want to leave out a Hulu video…

  2. You can get xFinity anywhere as long as you sign into your Comcast account. You also must download the xFinity player though.

  3. My main question is, how can my bill go from $105 to $124 when I didn’t OK any changes? I checked my internet speed on “Speak Easy” and it’s still only 20 MPs.

  5. Darn right Comcast will lower your bill by 10% or so. Keeps you on their tit. Netflix is awesome. I’m the third or fourth person I know thats gotten rid of cable.
